Bateas are traditional shallow trays, historically used for carrying and serving, now reimagined as vibrant vessels of symbolic storytelling. In the Wixárika tradition, they become canvases of spiritual and cultural expression—each one meticulously handcrafted with yarn pressed into beeswax, preserving a living lineage of sacred craft.
Design
The Peyote Wixárika Batea features a central hikuri (peyote) symbol—considered the spiritual gateway in Wixárika cosmology—surrounded by concentric lines. This design echoes the 1968 Mexico City Olympic poster, itself inspired by Huichol art, forming a layered homage to identity, memory, and modern history.
