A collaboration created by artist Edgar Orlaineta and designer Simon Hamui that emerged from a multidisciplinary exhibition by Orlaineta, which was exhibited at Siqueiros’ La Tallera. The series consists of a lounge chair (Ruth Lounge Chair), a coffee table (Red Shift Table), and a bookcase (Miss Expanding Universe), all inspired by the exhibition’s central concept.
Design
This cabinet is a sculptural exercise to honor the theme of the hand made process which has frozen that movement in time—using the natural grain of the walnut to mimic the stretch of the fabric.
The doors and structure of the piece are made of American walnut boards finished in natural oil and assembled with sheets of extra-clear glass. It features various brass elements, including turned hinges and hand-sculpted pegs. Both the doors and the wooden back have design details that were hand carved by Orlaineta.
Based on Isamu Noguchi's sculpture "Miss Expanding Universe", the costumes and the ballet "Expanding Uni- verse" and "La Guiablesse" by the dancer Ruth Page (1899-1991) and on the house designed by Howard T. Fisher, where Page resided, Orlaineta, alongside Hamui came up with this peculiar angular design.
