Po Shun Leong is a British-born architect, sculptor, and designer whose time in Mexico during the 1960s and ’70s shaped a deeply material and cultural approach to design. From his early work designing over 70 schools with CAPFCE in Michoacán to his contributions to the Ruta de la Amistad during the 1968 Olympics, Leong’s practice reflects a profound dialogue between structure, craft, and place.
While in Mexico, he created furniture collections merging vernacular traditions with experimental techniques.
Design
Designed in 1974 while living in Yucatán, the Chamela Chair reflects an elegant response to limited materials and local craft. Made from tropical hardwood with a canvas or leather seat and back, it captures a quiet harmony between structure, setting, and simplicity. With its crisp geometry and tactile warmth, the Chamela Chair offers restrained comfort and cultural resonance — a piece where modest resources meet thoughtful, enduring design.
