Po Shun Leong is a British-born architect, sculptor, and designer whose time in Mexico during the 1960s and ’70s shaped a deeply material and cultural approach to design. From his early work designing over 70 schools with CAPFCE in Michoacán to his contributions to the Ruta de la Amistad during the 1968 Olympics, Leong’s practice reflects a profound dialogue between structure, craft, and place.
While in Mexico, he created furniture collections merging vernacular traditions with experimental techniques.
Design
Originally designed in 1972, the Tulum Chair is Po Shun Leong’s architectural reimagining of the traditional Mexican butaque originally designed by Clara Porset. Originally crafted in tzalam wood with a white canvas seat, its folding, low-slung form pairs sculptural rhythm with practical ease. We offer a reinterpretation by Clasicos Mexicanos in Cedar Wood with a white canvas or brown leather seat. The chair reflects Leong’s deep sensitivity to place, tradition, and material. A timeless expression of vernacular design — effortless, portable, and quietly iconic.
