Xochicalco Serving Dish

Onora
About

Inspired by the ceremonial vessels unearthed at the archaeological site of Xochicalco, this collection reflects a timeless dialogue between ritual and design. Each piece is formed from Oaxaca’s iconic barro negro, a black clay unique to San Bartolo Coyotepec. With a heritage that spans over 2,500 years, barro negro has long been used to craft utilitarian and spiritual forms—its origins found in the very memory of the land.

Design
The platón, or serving dish offers both utility and presence—perfect for serving or as a sculptural piece at the entry of a home. Through hand-modeling and bruñido (burnishing), the clay transforms into vessels that are both ancestral and contemporary—objects that carry the memory of earth and ceremony. The clay’s transformation over time—from a matte, silvery grey to its now iconic polished black—reflects a shift in both technique and intention.
